Era verão, e o campo estava lindo. Havia plantações, grandes florestas e lagoas. Perto de um rio, ficava uma antiga casa de fazenda. Entre a casa e a água, cresciam plantas com folhas tão grandes que uma criança pequena podia ficar em pé debaixo delas.
English translation
It was summer, and the countryside was beautiful. There were fields, great forests, and ponds. Near a river stood an old farmhouse. Between the house and the water, plants grew with leaves so large that a small child could stand beneath them.

Nesse lugar protegido, uma pata esperava no ninho que seus filhotes nascessem. Ela já estava cansada de ficar sentada sobre os ovos. Os filhotes demoravam a nascer, e quase ninguém vinha visitá-la. As outras patas preferiam nadar no rio.
English translation
In this sheltered place, a mother duck waited in her nest for her ducklings to hatch. She was already tired of sitting on the eggs. The ducklings were taking a long time to hatch, and hardly anyone came to visit her. The other ducks preferred to swim in the river.
