Scene 1 · Beginner

The fox's shallow dish

English translation

The fox and the stork visited each other. They seemed to be good friends. One day, the fox invited the stork to lunch. He decided to play a joke on her and served her only soup in a very shallow dish.

English translation

The fox easily lapped up the soup from the dish. The stork, however, could dip only the tip of her long beak into the soup. So she remained hungry.

English translation

“I’m sorry you don’t like the soup,” said the fox.

English translation

The stork asked him not to apologize and invited him to lunch at her home. They chose a day for the fox to visit her.
