Scene 1 · Beginner

Der Kaiser liebt neue Kleider

The emperor loves new clothes

English translation

Many years ago, there lived an emperor who loved new clothes more than anything. He spent all his money on them and always wanted to be well dressed. He had no interest in his soldiers, and he did not like going to the theater either. What he liked best was riding in his carriage and showing off a new outfit.

English translation

He had a different coat for every hour of the day. That is why people so often said, “The emperor is in his dressing room.”
