Vor vielen Jahren lebte ein Kaiser, der sein ganzes Geld für neue Kleider ausgab. Nichts war ihm wichtiger, als immer gut gekleidet zu sein. Für seine Soldaten interessierte er sich nicht, und auch das Theater machte ihm keine Freude. Am liebsten fuhr er in seiner Kutsche aus, um einen neuen Anzug vorzuführen.
English translation
Long ago, there lived an emperor who spent all his money on new clothes. Nothing mattered more to him than always being well dressed. He took no interest in his soldiers, and the theater gave him no pleasure either. His favorite thing was to ride out in his carriage to show off a new suit.

Für jede Stunde des Tages besaß er einen anderen Rock. Von anderen Königen sagte man vielleicht: „Er ist in seinem Arbeitszimmer.“ Von diesem Kaiser dagegen hieß es: „Der Kaiser ist in seinem Ankleidezimmer.“
English translation
He had a different coat for every hour of the day. People might say of other kings, “He is in his study.” But of this emperor they would say, “The emperor is in his dressing room.”
