Ήταν το τελευταίο βράδυ της χρονιάς. Έκανε τρομερό κρύο, είχε σχεδόν σκοτεινιάσει και το χιόνι έπεφτε πυκνό. Μέσα στο σκοτάδι, ένα φτωχό κοριτσάκι περιπλανιόταν στους δρόμους με το κεφάλι ακάλυπτο και τα πόδια γυμνά.
It was the last evening of the year. It was terribly cold, it was almost dark, and snow was falling thickly. In the darkness, a poor little girl wandered through the streets with her head uncovered and her feet bare.
Όταν είχε φύγει από το σπίτι, φορούσε ένα ζευγάρι παντόφλες. Ήταν όμως τόσο μεγάλες, αφού παλιότερα τις φορούσε η μητέρα του, που δεν το βοηθούσαν ιδιαίτερα. Προσπαθώντας να περάσει τον δρόμο για να αποφύγει δυο άμαξες που έρχονταν με μεγάλη ταχύτητα, τις είχε χάσει και τις δυο. Τη μία δεν μπόρεσε να τη βρει.
When she left home, she was wearing a pair of slippers. Her mother used to wear them, so they were far too big to be of much help. The little girl had lost both slippers while trying to cross the road to avoid two carriages coming at great speed. She could not find one of them.
Την άλλη την άρπαξε ένα αγόρι και έφυγε τρέχοντας. Είπε μάλιστα πως θα την έκανε κούνια, όταν κάποτε αποκτούσε δικά του παιδιά.
A boy grabbed the other and ran away. He even said he would use it as a cradle when he had children of his own someday.
