Illustration for the scene “The Sea King's castle”

Scene 1 · Intermediate

The Sea King's castle

English translation

Far out in the ocean, where the water is deep blue and clear as crystal, the sea reaches an incredible depth. Even if many church towers were stacked one on top of another, they would not reach from the bottom to the surface. The Sea King and his subjects live down in those depths.

English translation

The seabed is not a barren expanse of yellow sand. Strange flowers and plants grow everywhere, and their flexible leaves move with the slightest current. Fish pass among the branches, as birds do among the trees on land.

English translation

At the deepest point stands the king’s castle. Its walls are made of coral and its tall windows of transparent amber. Shells cover the roof, opening and closing with the movement of the water. Inside each shell shines a pearl so beautiful it could adorn a queen’s crown.
