Был последний вечер года. Уже темнело, шёл сильный снег, и было очень холодно. По тёмным улицам шла бедная маленькая девочка. На ней не было шапки, а ноги были босые.
It was the last evening of the year. It was already growing dark, heavy snow was falling, and it was very cold. A poor little girl walked through the dark streets. She had no hat on, and her feet were bare.
Из дома она вышла в тапочках. Раньше их носила её мать, поэтому для девочки они были слишком большими. Когда девочка перебегала улицу перед двумя быстрыми каретами, она потеряла оба тапочка. Один она не смогла найти, а другой схватил мальчик и убежал с ним.
She had left home wearing slippers. Her mother had worn them before, so they were much too big for the girl. As she ran across the street in front of two speeding carriages, she lost both slippers. She could not find one, and a boy grabbed the other and ran away with it.
