Illustration for the scene “A barefoot girl in the snow”

Scene 1 · Intermediate

A barefoot girl in the snow

English translation

On the last evening of the year, it was terribly cold. It was almost dark, and snow was falling thickly. A poor little girl wandered through the dark streets, bareheaded and barefoot. She had been wearing slippers when she left home, but they had been of little use: they were much too big, for her mother had worn them before her.

English translation

The girl had lost both slippers as she ran across the street to escape two carriages racing along at tremendous speed. She never found one slipper, and some boy grabbed the other and ran away. He said that when he had children of his own, the slipper would serve them as a cradle.
