Een wetgeleerde, een man die veel van de wet wist, stond op. Hij wilde Jezus testen. ‘Meester, wat moet ik doen om voor altijd te leven?’ vroeg hij.
A legal expert—a man who knew a lot about the law—stood up. He wanted to test Jesus. “Teacher, what must I do to live forever?” he asked.
Jezus vroeg hem wat er in de wet stond. De wetgeleerde antwoordde dat je de Heer, je God, moet liefhebben met heel je hart en ziel, met al je kracht en met je hele verstand. Je moet ook van je naaste houden, net als van jezelf.
Jesus asked him what the law said. The legal expert answered that you must love the Lord your God with all your heart and soul, with all your strength, and with your whole mind. You must also love your neighbor as yourself.
‘Dat is het goede antwoord,’ zei Jezus. ‘Doe dat en u zult leven.’
“That is the right answer,” Jesus said. “Do that, and you will live.”
