De spiegel van de boosaardige tovenaar
The wicked magician's mirror

Listen, our story begins! Hopefully, by the end we'll know more than we do now. Once upon a time there was a very wicked wizard. He was delighted with a mirror he had made himself. Everything good and beautiful became almost invisible in it, while ugly and useless things looked ten times worse than they really were.

Beautiful landscapes looked like cooked spinach. Even the most handsome people had such twisted faces that their friends wouldn’t recognize them. A single freckle seemed to spread across someone’s whole nose and mouth. And as soon as anyone thought something good or pious, a wrinkle appeared in the mirror.

English translation
The wizard chuckled at his clever invention. The students at his school of magic told everyone how wonderful the mirror was. They said it finally let you see the world and its people as they really were.
