Illustration for the scene “The wicked magician's mirror”

Scene 1 · Intermediate

O espelho do mago perverso

The wicked magician's mirror

English translation

Listen: our story is about to begin! When we reach the end, we’ll know more than we do now.

English translation

Once upon a time there was an extremely wicked wizard. He was delighted because he had built a very special mirror: everything good and beautiful shrank when reflected in it, until it almost disappeared. But ugly and worthless things grew larger and seemed ten times worse.

English translation

A lovely landscape turned into something like boiled spinach. The most beautiful people appeared with their faces so distorted that even their friends wouldn’t recognize them. A simple freckle seemed to spread across the nose and mouth. And whenever someone had a kind or pious thought, a wrinkle appeared in the mirror.

English translation

The wizard chuckled, pleased with his invention. The students at his school of magic spread the news. According to them, that mirror finally showed the world and its people as they really were.
