Scene 1 · Intermediate

Oglinda vrăjitorului cel rău

The wicked magician's mirror

English translation

Listen! A story is beginning, and by the end of it, perhaps we’ll understand more than we do now. Once upon a time there was an exceedingly wicked wizard. He was overjoyed because he had invented an unusual mirror: in it, good things shrank until they almost disappeared, while ugly and useless things seemed ten times worse.

English translation

A wonderful view looked like boiled spinach in the mirror. Beautiful people appeared so disfigured that even their friends wouldn’t have recognized them. A tiny freckle seemed to spread across someone’s nose and mouth, and a kind thought showed up as a scowl on their face. The wizard chuckled, delighted with his invention.

English translation

The pupils at his school of magic spread the news. They claimed that at last the mirror showed the world and its people as they truly were.
