Scene 1 · Intermediate
Un avertissement au bord du fleuve
A warning at the river
English translation
Moses and Aaron represented the Israelites before Pharaoh, the king of Egypt. God had seen the king’s stubbornness and his refusal to free the people, and he asked Moses to meet him the next morning on the riverbank. Moses was to bring the staff that had turned into a snake.
English translation
Moses was to relay a request from the Lord, the God of the Hebrews: that the king let his people go so they could serve God in the wilderness. To make the king recognize God’s power, God would strike the river’s waters with the staff; they would turn to blood, the fish would die, and the water would become foul.
English translation
Moses was also to tell Aaron to stretch out his own staff over the rivers, canals, pools, and ponds. All of Egypt would be filled with blood, even the containers made of wood and stone.
