Scene 1 · Intermediate
Moses and Aaron had spoken to Pharaoh, the king of Egypt, on behalf of the Israelites. But Pharaoh refused to let them go.
“Meet Pharaoh by the riverbank tomorrow when he comes down to the water,” God said to Moses. “Take the staff that turned into a snake. Tell him that I, the Lord, the God of the Hebrews, have sent you. Demand that he let my people go so that they can serve me in the wilderness. He has not listened yet.”
“Now I will give him a sign so that he understands that I am the Lord. When the staff strikes the water in the river, the water will turn to blood. The fish will die, and the river will stink so badly that the Egyptians will not want to drink from it.”
God also said that Aaron should stretch out his staff over Egypt’s rivers, streams, and pools. The water would turn to blood throughout the land, even in vessels of wood and stone.
