Scene 1 · Intermediate
Long ago, in a time when wishes could still come true, a king had several very beautiful daughters. The youngest was so beautiful that even the sun, despite all it had already seen, marveled when it lit her face.
A dark forest stretched out near the castle. Beneath an old linden tree, a well offered a little coolness during the hottest hours. The princess often came to sit there. To while away her boredom, she tossed her golden ball high into the air and caught it: of all her toys, it was her favorite.
