Em tempos antigos, quando um desejo ainda podia se realizar, vivia um rei que tinha várias filhas. Todas eram bonitas, mas a caçula era tão bela que até o sol, acostumado a ver tantas coisas, se surpreendia ao iluminar seu rosto.
English translation
In ancient times, when wishes could still come true, there lived a king who had several daughters. They were all beautiful, but the youngest was so lovely that even the sun, accustomed to seeing so many things, was amazed as it lit up her face.

Perto do castelo havia uma grande floresta escura. Sob uma velha árvore, uma tília, ficava um poço. Nos dias de muito calor, a princesa ia até lá e se sentava à beira do poço, onde o ar era fresco. Quando se entediava, pegava sua bola de ouro, jogava para o alto e a apanhava de novo. Era seu brinquedo favorito.
English translation
Near the castle stood a large, dark forest. Under an old linden tree stood a well. On very hot days, the princess went there and sat at the edge of the well, where the air was cool. When she got bored, she took her golden ball, tossed it into the air, and caught it again. It was her favorite toy.
