Dengang ønsker endnu kunne gå i opfyldelse, levede der en konge med flere smukke døtre. Den yngste var så smuk, at selv solen, der ellers havde set lidt af hvert, blev forbløffet, når den skinnede på hendes ansigt.
Back when wishes could still come true, there lived a king with several beautiful daughters. The youngest was so beautiful that even the sun, which had seen a thing or two in its time, was amazed whenever it shone on her face.
Tæt ved slottet lå en stor, mørk skov. Her, under et gammelt lindetræ, var der en kølig brønd, hvor prinsessen gerne satte sig på varme dage. Når hun kedede sig, kastede hun sin guldkugle højt op i luften og greb den igen. Kuglen var hendes yndlingslegetøj.
Near the castle lay a large, dark forest. There, beneath an old linden tree, was a cool well where the princess liked to sit on hot days. When she was bored, she would toss her golden ball high into the air and catch it again. The ball was her favorite toy.
