Scene 1 · Intermediate
In a time when wishes still came true, a king lived with his beautiful daughters. The youngest was so beautiful that even the sun marveled whenever it shone on her face, although it had seen so much already.
Near the castle was a large, dark forest. Beneath an old lime tree there stood a well. On hot days, the king’s daughter went into the forest and sat by the cool water. When she was bored, she tossed her golden ball into the air and caught it again. Of all her toys, she liked this ball best.
