In un tempo lontano, quando i desideri potevano ancora avverarsi, viveva un re che aveva diverse figlie, tutte belle. La più giovane, però, era così bella che perfino il sole, pur avendo visto tante cose, si meravigliava ogni volta che le illuminava il viso.
English translation
Long ago, when wishes could still come true, there lived a king who had several daughters, all beautiful. The youngest, however, was so beautiful that even the sun, though it had seen so much, marveled every time it shone on her face.

Vicino al castello si estendeva una grande foresta buia. Sotto un vecchio tiglio, un albero della foresta, c'era un pozzo. Nelle giornate più calde la principessa andava a sedersi lì, dove trovava un po' di fresco. Quando si annoiava, giocava con la sua palla d'oro: la lanciava in aria e la riprendeva. Era il suo giocattolo preferito.
English translation
A great, dark forest stretched near the castle. In the forest, beneath an old linden tree, was a well. On the hottest days, the princess would go and sit there, where she could cool off a little. When she got bored, she played with her golden ball: she tossed it into the air and caught it again. It was her favorite toy.
