Réges-régen, amikor a kívánságok még teljesülhettek, élt egy király. Minden lánya szép volt, de a legkisebb olyan gyönyörű, hogy még a sokat látott nap is elcsodálkozott, valahányszor az arcára sütött.
Long ago, when wishes could still come true, there lived a king. Every one of his daughters was beautiful, but the youngest was so lovely that even the sun, which had seen so much, marveled whenever it shone on her face.
A kastély mellett nagy, sötét erdő húzódott. Egy öreg hársfa alatt kút állt, ahová a királylány a forró napokon szívesen kiment. Leült a hűvös víz mellé, és ha unatkozott, elővette az aranylabdáját. Magasra dobta, majd elkapta: mindennél jobban szeretett ezzel játszani.
A large, dark forest stretched out beside the castle. There was a well beneath an old linden tree, where the princess liked to go on hot days. She sat beside the cool water, and when she was bored, she took out her golden ball. She tossed it high and caught it again: she loved playing with it more than anything.
