Scene 1 · Intermediate
Long ago, when wishes still came true, there lived a king whose daughters were all beautiful. But the youngest was so beautiful that even the sun, though it had seen so much, was amazed every time it shone on her face.
A large, dark forest stretched near the castle. There, beneath an old linden tree, was a well. On very hot days, the princess would go into the forest and sit beside the cool water. When she began to get bored, she would take her golden ball, toss it into the air, and catch it.
Of all her toys, she loved this one most.
