Scene 1 · Intermediate

L'imperatore ama i vestiti nuovi

The emperor loves new clothes

English translation

Many years ago, there lived an emperor who loved new clothes so much that he spent all his money buying them. His greatest ambition was always to look elegant. He was not interested in soldiers and did not find going to the theater entertaining: he preferred to ride out in his carriage to show everyone a new outfit.

English translation

He had a different jacket for every hour of the day. Of another ruler, one might have said, “He is in his private study.” Of him, people said, “The emperor is in his dressing room.”
