Scene 1 · Intermediate
De keizer houdt van nieuwe kleren
The emperor loves new clothes
English translation
Long, long ago, there lived an emperor who loved new clothes so much that he spent all his money on them. He wanted only one thing: to always be well dressed. His soldiers did not interest him, and the theater could not entertain him either.
English translation
What he liked best was riding through the city in his carriage to show off his latest clothes.
English translation
He had a different coat for every hour of the day. People usually said of a king, “He is in his study.” But of this emperor they said, “The emperor is in his dressing room.”
