Scene 1 · Intermediate

Kejsaren älskar nya kläder

The emperor loves new clothes

English translation

Many, many years ago, there lived an emperor who was so fond of new clothes that he spent all his money on them. The most important thing to him was always to be well dressed. His soldiers didn’t interest him, and he found the theater boring. What he liked best was to ride out in his carriage and show off a new outfit.

English translation

He had a coat for every hour of the day. Of a king, one might say, “He is in his study.” But of the emperor, people said, “He is in his dressing room.”
