Scene 1 · Intermediate

Împăratul iubește hainele noi

The emperor loves new clothes

English translation

Many years ago, there lived an emperor who was so passionate about new clothes that he spent all his money on them. He had no ambition other than always to be well dressed. He was not interested in soldiers, and the theater did not entertain him. Instead, he liked to go out in his carriage to show everyone yet another new outfit.

English translation

He had an outfit for every hour of the day. Of another king, people might have said, “He is in his study.” But of this emperor, people said, “He is in the dressing room.”
