Scene 1 · Intermediate

L’empereur aime les habits neufs

The emperor loves new clothes

English translation

Long ago, there lived an emperor who was so passionate about new clothes that he spent all his money on his wardrobe. His only ambition was always to be elegantly dressed. He took no interest in his soldiers or the theater; his carriage rides were mainly a chance to show off a new outfit.

French

English translation

He owned a jacket for every hour of the day. Where people would have said of another ruler that he was in his study, they said of him, “The emperor is in his dressing room.”
