Scene 1 · Intermediate

Al emperador le encanta la ropa nueva

The emperor loves new clothes

English translation

Many, many years ago, there lived an emperor whose greatest concern was having new clothes. He spent all his money on them and had no ambition other than always appearing well dressed. He hardly cared about his soldiers, and the theater did not entertain him. He only enjoyed going out in his carriage to show off a new outfit.

English translation

He had a different jacket for every hour of the day. While you might have said of another king that he was in his office, you could always say of him, “The emperor is in his dressing room.”
