Scene 1 · Beginner

O rață așteaptă pe cuib

A duck waiting on her nest

English translation

It was summer, and the fields and forests in the countryside were full of color. A deep river flowed beside an old farmhouse. Between the house and the river grew plants with such large leaves that a small child could stand beneath them.

English translation

There, sheltered under the leaves, a duck sat on her nest and waited for the ducklings to hatch. The wait was long, and the duck had begun to get bored. The other ducks rarely came to visit. They preferred to swim in the river rather than climb the slippery bank to talk with her.
