Scene 1 · Beginner

En engel besøger Maria

An angel visits Mary

English translation

Mary lived in Nazareth in Galilee and was engaged to Joseph. Joseph was a descendant of King David. One day God sent the angel Gabriel to Mary. The angel greeted her and said that God was with her. Mary was troubled. What did the greeting mean?

Danish

»Vær ikke bange, Maria,« sagde englen. »Du skal have en søn. Du skal kalde ham Jesus. Gud vil give ham Davids plads som konge. Hans rige vil aldrig få ende.«

English translation

“Don’t be afraid, Mary,” the angel said. “You will have a son. You are to name him Jesus. God will give him David’s place as king. His kingdom will never end.”

Danish

»Hvordan kan det ske? Jeg er jo jomfru,« sagde Maria.

English translation

“How can this happen? But I’m a virgin,” Mary said.

Danish

Englen forklarede at Helligånden ville komme over hende.

English translation

The angel explained that the Holy Spirit would come upon her. That was why the child would be called the Son of God. The angel also told her that Mary’s relative Elizabeth was expecting a son. She was old, and people thought she couldn’t have children. Now she was in her sixth month of pregnancy. Nothing was impossible for God.

English translation

“I serve God. Let it happen as you have said,” Mary replied. Then the angel left.
