Un ange rend visite à Marie

An angel visits Mary

English translation

Elizabeth is six months pregnant when God sends the angel Gabriel to Nazareth, in Galilee. He comes to see Mary, a young woman who is a virgin and is engaged to Joseph, a descendant of David. The angel greets her and tells her that the Lord is with her. Mary is troubled.

French

English translation

“Do not be afraid,” Gabriel tells her. “You will have a son, and you will name him Jesus. He will be called the Son of the Most High. God will give him the throne of David, and he will reign forever over the descendants of Jacob.”

English translation

Mary asks how this is possible, since she is a virgin. Gabriel explains that the Holy Spirit and the power of God will act upon her. The child will be called the Son of God. He adds that Elizabeth, her elderly relative who was thought to be unable to have children, is also expecting a son. Nothing God announces is impossible.

French

Puis l’ange part.

English translation

Mary agrees to serve the Lord and receive what he promises her. Then the angel leaves.
