Mária Názáretben élt, Galileában. József jegyese volt, vagyis össze akartak házasodni. József Dávid király családjából származott. Mária még szűz volt.
Mary lived in Nazareth, in Galilee. She was engaged to Joseph, which meant they planned to marry. Joseph came from the family of King David. Mary was still a virgin.
Mária rokona, Erzsébet már hat hónapja gyermeket várt, amikor Isten elküldte Gábriel angyalt Máriához. Az angyal köszöntötte, és elmondta, hogy Isten vele van. Mária nyugtalan lett, mert nem értette ezt a különös köszöntést.
Mary’s relative Elizabeth had been expecting a child for six months when God sent the angel Gabriel to Mary. The angel greeted her and told her that God was with her. Mary became uneasy because she did not understand this strange greeting.
– Ne félj, Mária! Isten jóindulattal van irántad. Fiad fog születni, és Jézusnak nevezed el. Isten Fiának fogják nevezni. Dávid király trónját kapja meg, és örökké uralkodik majd Jákob leszármazottai fölött.
“Do not be afraid, Mary! God looks on you with favor. You will have a son, and you will name him Jesus. He will be called the Son of God. He will receive the throne of King David and reign forever over the descendants of Jacob.”
– Hogyan lehetséges ez, hiszen szűz vagyok? – kérdezte Mária.
“How is this possible, since I am a virgin?” Mary asked.
Az angyal elmondta, hogy a Szentlélek száll le rá, és Isten ereje lesz vele. Ezért a gyermek szent lesz, és Isten Fiának nevezik majd. Erzsébetről is beszélt: ő már idős volt. Korábban azt mondták róla, hogy nem lehet gyermeke, most mégis fiút várt. Isten számára semmi sem lehetetlen.
The angel explained that the Holy Spirit would come upon her and God’s power would be with her. So the child would be holy and would be called the Son of God. He also spoke about Elizabeth: she was already old. People had said before that she could not have a child, but now she was expecting a son. Nothing is impossible for God.
– Az Úr szolgálója vagyok. Történjen úgy, ahogy mondtad – felelte Mária.
“I am the Lord’s servant. May it happen as you have said,” Mary replied.
