Scene 1 · Beginner

Een engel bezoekt Maria

An angel visits Mary

Dutch

Elisabet was zes maanden zwanger toen God de engel Gabriël naar Nazaret in Galilea stuurde. Daar woonde Maria.

English translation

Elizabeth was six months pregnant when God sent the angel Gabriel to Nazareth in Galilee. Mary lived there. She was engaged to Joseph, a descendant of David. Mary was still a virgin.

English translation

Gabriel came in and said to her, “Rejoice, Mary. God has shown you favor, and the Lord is with you.”

Dutch

Maria schrok van zijn woorden. Wat betekende deze begroeting?

English translation

Mary was startled by his words. What did this greeting mean?

English translation

“Don’t be afraid,” the angel said. “God has chosen you. You will have a son, and you must name him Jesus. He will be great and will be called the Son of the Most High. God will make him king, just like his ancestor David. He will rule over the descendants of Jacob forever.”

English translation

“How can I have a child?” Mary asked. “I have never slept with a man.”

English translation

The angel replied, “The Holy Spirit will come upon you. Through God’s power, you will have a child. That is why this holy child will be called the Son of God. Your relative Elizabeth will also have a son. She is already old, and people thought she could not have children. Yet she is now six months pregnant.”

Dutch

Voor God is niets onmogelijk.’

English translation

“Nothing is impossible for God.”

English translation

Mary said, “I want to serve the Lord. May what you have said happen to me.”

Dutch

Toen ging de engel weg.

English translation

Then the angel left.
