Scene 1 · Beginner

Ein Engel besucht Maria

An angel visits Mary

German

Maria lebte in Nazareth in Galiläa.

English translation

Mary lived in Nazareth in Galilee. She was still a virgin and engaged to Joseph. Joseph was a descendant of King David. When Mary’s relative Elizabeth was six months pregnant, God sent the angel Gabriel to Mary.

English translation

The angel greeted her and said that the Lord was with her. Mary was troubled and did not understand the special greeting.

German

„Hab keine Angst, Maria“, sagte Gabriel.

English translation

“Don’t be afraid, Mary,” Gabriel said. “God looks kindly on you. You will have a son, and you are to name him Jesus. He will be great and will be called the Son of God. God will make him king, as he made his ancestor David. He will rule over the descendants of Jacob forever. His kingdom will never end.”

German

„Wie kann das sein?“, fragte Maria. „Ich bin doch Jungfrau.“

English translation

“How can this be?” Mary asked. “I am still a virgin.”

English translation

Gabriel explained that the Holy Spirit would come to her. Through God’s power, she would have the child. That is why the holy child would be called the Son of God. Then he told her about Elizabeth. She was already old, and people had thought she could not have children. But now she was six months pregnant.

German

Für Gott war nichts unmöglich.

English translation
