An angel visits Mary
“The Lord is with you,” Gabriel told Mary. “God has blessed you.”
Mary was worried and did not understand this greeting.
“Don't be afraid, Mary,” the angel said. “God is pleased with you. You will have a son, and you will name him Jesus.”
Gabriel said that Jesus would be great. David had been king long ago, and Jesus would come from David's family. God would make Jesus king too. He would rule over the people of Jacob's family forever. His kingdom would never end.
“How can this happen?” Mary asked. “I am a virgin.”
Gabriel explained that the Holy Spirit would come upon her and that God's power would make this possible. For this reason, her holy child would be called the Son of God.
“Your relative Elizabeth is also going to have a son,” he said. “She is old, and people thought she could not have children. But she is now in her sixth month of pregnancy. Nothing God says is impossible.”
“I am the Lord's servant,” Mary answered. “Let it happen to me as you have said.”
Then the angel left her.
