Gud skickade ängeln Gabriel till Maria i Nasaret i Galileen. Maria skulle gifta sig med Josef. Josef hörde till kung Davids släkt. Gabriel hälsade Maria med orden ”Gud är med dig.” Maria blev orolig och undrade vad han menade.
God sent the angel Gabriel to Mary in Nazareth in Galilee. Mary was going to marry Joseph. Joseph belonged to King David's family. Gabriel greeted Mary with the words “God is with you.” Mary was troubled and wondered what he meant.
”Var inte rädd, Maria”, sa Gabriel. ”Du ska få en son och ge honom namnet Jesus. Han ska kallas Guds son. Gud ska göra honom till kung över Jakobs folk. Han ska få Davids tron, och hans rike ska aldrig ta slut.”
“Don't be afraid, Mary,” Gabriel said. “You will have a son and name him Jesus. He will be called the Son of God. God will make him king over Jacob's people. He will receive David's throne, and his kingdom will never end.”
”Hur kan jag få ett barn när jag aldrig har varit med en man?” frågade Maria.
“How can I have a child when I have never been with a man?” Mary asked.
Gabriel förklarade att den helige Ande skulle komma till henne och att Gud skulle ge henne barnet. Han berättade också att Marias släkting Elisabet väntade en son. Hon var redan i sjätte månaden, trots att hon var gammal och folk hade sagt att hon inte kunde få barn. Gabriel sa att inget av det Gud hade sagt var omöjligt.
Gabriel explained that the Holy Spirit would come to her and that God would give her the child. He also told her that her relative Elizabeth was expecting a son. She was already in her sixth month, even though she was old and people had said she could not have children. Gabriel said that none of the things God had said were impossible.
”Jag vill göra det Gud vill. Låt det bli som du har sagt”, svarade Maria. Sedan lämnade Gabriel henne.
“I want to do what God wants. Let it happen as you have said,” Mary replied. Then Gabriel left her.
