Scene 1 · Intermediate

En engel besøger Maria

An angel visits Mary

English translation

When Elizabeth was in her sixth month of pregnancy, God sent the angel Gabriel to Nazareth, a town in Galilee. Mary lived there. She was a virgin and was engaged to Joseph, a descendant of David. Gabriel came in and said to her: “Rejoice, Mary! God has shown you great favor. The Lord is with you, and you are blessed among women.”

English translation

Mary was troubled when she saw the angel and heard what he said. What could such a greeting mean?

English translation

“Don’t be afraid, Mary,” Gabriel said. “God has shown you his favor. You will become pregnant and give birth to a son, whom you are to name Jesus. He will be great and will be called the Son of the Most High. The Lord God will give him the throne of his ancestor David. He will rule over Jacob’s descendants forever, and his kingdom will never end.”

English translation

“How can that happen when I am a virgin?” Mary asked.

Danish

»Helligånden vil komme over dig, og den Højestes kraft vil hvile over dig,« svarede Gabriel.

English translation

“The Holy Spirit will come upon you, and the power of the Most High will rest upon you,” Gabriel answered. “That is why the holy child you give birth to will be called the Son of God. Think of your relative Elizabeth. People thought she couldn’t have children, but even in her old age she has become pregnant with a son. She is already in her sixth month.”

English translation

“Nothing God has said is impossible.”

English translation

“I am the Lord’s servant,” Mary said. “May it happen to me as you have said.”

Danish

Så forlod englen hende.

English translation

Then the angel left her.
