Scene 1 · Beginner

Um anjo visita Maria

An angel visits Mary

English translation

God sent the angel Gabriel to Nazareth, a town in Galilee. He went to speak with Mary, a young virgin who was engaged to Joseph. Joseph was from the family of King David. At that time, Elizabeth, a relative of Mary, was six months pregnant.

Portuguese

O anjo entrou e disse a Maria: — Alegre-se! Deus escolheu você e está com você.

English translation

The angel entered and said to Mary: “Rejoice! God has chosen you and is with you.”

English translation

Mary was frightened and did not understand that greeting. Gabriel continued: “Do not be afraid, Mary. You will have a son, and you will name him Jesus. He will be called the Son of God. God will make him a king, like his ancestor David. He will reign forever over the people of Jacob, and his kingdom will never end.”

Portuguese

— Como isso pode acontecer, se sou virgem? — perguntou Maria.

English translation

“How can this happen, since I am a virgin?” Mary asked.

English translation

The angel explained that the Holy Spirit would come upon her. By God's power, she would have that holy child. For this reason, he would be called the Son of God. Gabriel also told her that Elizabeth was expecting a child, even though she was old. People thought she could not have children, but she was already six months pregnant.

Portuguese

Nada do que Deus dizia era impossível.

English translation

Nothing God said was impossible.

Portuguese

— Sou serva do Senhor — respondeu Maria. — Que aconteça comigo o que o senhor disse.

English translation

“I am the Lord’s servant,” Mary replied. “May it happen to me as you have said.”

Portuguese

Então o anjo foi embora.

English translation

Then the angel went away.
