Elżbieta była w szóstym miesiącu ciąży. Wtedy Bóg posłał anioła Gabriela do Nazaretu, miasta w Galilei. Mieszkała tam Maryja. Była dziewicą i była zaręczona z Józefem, potomkiem Dawida.
Elizabeth was in her sixth month of pregnancy. Then God sent the angel Gabriel to Nazareth, a town in Galilee. Mary lived there. She was a virgin and was engaged to Joseph, a descendant of David.
Anioł wszedł do niej i powiedział, że Bóg jest z nią i obdarzył ją wielką łaską. Maryja zaniepokoiła się. Nie rozumiała, dlaczego anioł tak ją wita.
The angel came to her and said that God was with her and had shown her great favor. Mary was troubled. She did not understand why the angel was greeting her that way.
– Nie bój się, Maryjo – powiedział Gabriel. – Urodzisz syna i dasz mu imię Jezus. Będzie wielki i zostanie nazwany Synem Najwyższego. Bóg da mu tron jego przodka Dawida. Będzie na zawsze królem potomków Jakuba, a jego królestwo nigdy się nie skończy.
“Do not be afraid, Mary,” Gabriel said. “You will give birth to a son and name him Jesus. He will be great and will be called the Son of the Most High. God will give him the throne of his ancestor David. He will be king over the descendants of Jacob forever, and his kingdom will never end.”
– Jak to możliwe, skoro jestem dziewicą? – zapytała Maryja.
“How is that possible, since I am a virgin?” Mary asked.
Anioł wyjaśnił, że zstąpi na nią Duch Święty i osłoni ją moc Boga. Dlatego jej dziecko będzie święte i zostanie nazwane Synem Bożym. Powiedział też o jej krewnej Elżbiecie. Była już stara i ludzie uważali, że nie może mieć dzieci, a jednak od sześciu miesięcy nosiła w sobie syna. Bóg może spełnić każde swoje słowo.
The angel explained that the Holy Spirit would come upon her and God's power would overshadow her. That is why her child would be holy and would be called the Son of God. He also told her about her relative Elizabeth. She was already old, and people thought she could not have children, yet she had been carrying a son for six months. God can make every word of his come true.
– Jestem służebnicą Pana – odpowiedziała Maryja. – Niech stanie się ze mną tak, jak powiedziałeś.
“I am the Lord's servant,” Mary replied. “May it happen to me as you have said.”
Wtedy anioł odszedł.
