Midden in de winter zat een koningin bij het raam te naaien. Buiten viel sneeuw. Het raam had een rand van zwart ebbenhout. Terwijl ze naar buiten keek, prikte ze met de naald in haar vinger. Drie druppels bloed vielen op de sneeuw. Het rood zag er mooi uit op het wit.
English translation
In the middle of winter, a queen sat sewing by the window. Outside, snow was falling. The window had a frame of black ebony. As she looked outside, she pricked her finger with the needle. Three drops of blood fell onto the snow. The red looked beautiful against the white.

De koningin dacht: ‘Ik wil graag een kind met een huid zo wit als sneeuw, wangen zo rood als bloed en haar zo zwart als dit hout.’
English translation
The queen thought, “I would like a child with skin as white as snow, cheeks as red as blood, and hair as black as this wood.”
Dutch
Kort daarna kreeg ze een dochter met precies die kleuren. Daarom noemden ze het meisje Sneeuwwitje. Maar toen het kind geboren was, stierf de koningin.
English translation
A short time later, she had a daughter with exactly those colors. That was why they named the girl Snow White. But when the child was born, the queen died.
