Es ist Winter, und draußen fällt Schnee. Eine Königin sitzt am Fenster und näht. Der Rahmen des Fensters ist aus schwarzem Ebenholz. Als die Königin in den Schnee schaut, sticht sie sich mit der Nadel in den Finger. Drei Tropfen Blut fallen auf den Schnee. Das Rot auf dem weißen Schnee gefällt ihr sehr.
English translation
It is winter, and snow is falling outside. A queen sits by the window and sews. The window frame is made of black ebony. As the queen looks at the snow, she pricks her finger with the needle. Three drops of blood fall onto the snow. She loves the red against the white snow.

Sie wünscht sich ein Kind mit weißer Haut wie Schnee, roten Wangen wie Blut und schwarzen Haaren wie das Holz am Fenster.
English translation
She wishes for a child with skin as white as snow, cheeks as red as blood, and hair as black as the wood of the window frame.

Bald bekommt sie eine Tochter, die genau so aussieht. Deshalb nennt man das Mädchen Schneewittchen. Doch bei ihrer Geburt stirbt die Königin.
English translation
Soon she has a daughter who looks exactly like that. That is why the girl is called Snow White. But the queen dies when she is born.
