Een engel bezoekt Maria
An angel visits Mary
English translation
When Elizabeth was six months pregnant, God sent the angel Gabriel to Nazareth, a city in Galilee. Mary lived there, a woman who was still a virgin. She was engaged to Joseph, a descendant of David. The angel came to her and greeted her: “Rejoice, Mary! God has granted you his favor.”

English translation
“Do not be afraid, Mary,” said the angel. “God looks kindly on you. You will become pregnant and give birth to a son. You must name him Jesus. He will be great and will be called the Son of the Most High. The Lord God will give him the throne of his ancestor David.”
English translation
“He will rule over the descendants of Jacob forever; his kingdom will never end.”
English translation
“How can that be?” Mary asked. “I have never slept with a man.”
English translation
The angel replied: “The Holy Spirit will come upon you, and the power of the Most High will overshadow you. That is why the holy child born to you will be called the Son of God. Your relative Elizabeth is also expecting a son, even though she is already old.”
English translation
“People said she could not have children, but now she is six months pregnant. Nothing God says is impossible.”

“I am the Lord’s servant,” Mary said. “Let what you have said happen to me.”

Daarna ging de engel weg.
