Scene 1 · Intermediate
An angel visits Mary
“Rejoice, you who have received God’s special favor!” the angel said. “The Lord is with you. You are blessed among women!”
Mary was deeply troubled by his words and wondered what such a greeting could mean.
“Don’t be afraid, Mary,” the angel told her. “God has shown you favor. You will become pregnant and give birth to a son, and you will name him Jesus. He will be great and will be called the Son of the Most High. The Lord God will give him the throne of his ancestor David.
He will rule over the descendants of Jacob forever, and his kingdom will never end.”
“How can this happen,” Mary asked, “since I am a virgin?”
“The Holy Spirit will come upon you, and the power of the Most High will cover you,” the angel answered. “That is why the holy child born to you will be called the Son of God. Your relative Elizabeth is also expecting a son, even in her old age.
People said she could not have children, but she is now in her sixth month of pregnancy. Nothing that God says is impossible.”
Mary replied, “I am the Lord’s servant. Let what you have said happen to me.”
Then the angel left her.
