Illustration for the scene “An angel visits Mary”

Scene 1 · Intermediate

Un ange rend visite à Marie

An angel visits Mary

English translation

Elizabeth was six months pregnant when God sent the angel Gabriel to Nazareth in Galilee. He was to go to Mary, a virgin engaged to Joseph, who was descended from David.

French

« Réjouis-toi, toi que Dieu comble de grâce ! Le Seigneur est avec toi. Tu es bénie entre les femmes ! » l’a saluée l’ange.

English translation

“Rejoice, you who are highly favored! The Lord is with you. You are blessed among women!” the angel greeted her.

English translation

Troubled, Mary tried to understand what these words meant.

French

« N’aie pas peur, a poursuivi Gabriel. Tu as trouvé grâce auprès de Dieu. »

English translation

“Do not be afraid,” Gabriel continued. “You have found favor with God. You will give birth to a son and name him Jesus. He will be great and will be called the Son of the Most High. God will give him the throne of his ancestor David. He will reign forever over the descendants of Jacob, and his kingdom will never end.”

French

English translation

“How will this happen, since I am a virgin?”

English translation

The angel explained to her that the Holy Spirit would come upon her and that the power of the Most High would overshadow her. The holy child would therefore be called the Son of God. Elizabeth, her relative, was also expecting a son despite her advanced age: the woman people said was barren had been pregnant for six months.

English translation

Nothing God says is impossible.

French

English translation

“I am the Lord’s servant,” Mary replied. “May what you have said happen to me.”

French

Alors Gabriel l’a quittée.

English translation

Then Gabriel left her.
