Scene 1 · Beginner

An angel visits Mary

English translation

Mary lived in Nazareth, a town in Galilee. She was a virgin and was engaged to Joseph, who was from the family of David. When her relative Elizabeth was six months pregnant, God sent the angel Gabriel to Mary.

English translation

The angel greeted her and told her that the Lord was with her. Mary was troubled and did not understand his greeting.

English translation

“Do not be afraid, Mary,” the angel told her. “You will give birth to a son, and you will name him Jesus. He will be called the Son of God. God will make him king, as his ancestor David was. He will reign forever.”

English translation

“How will this happen, since I am a virgin?” Mary asked.

English translation

The angel explained to her that the Holy Spirit would come upon her. Through God's power, the holy child would be born. He also told her that Elizabeth was expecting a son, even though she was now old and had been unable to have children until then. Nothing was impossible for God.

English translation

“I want to serve the Lord. Let it happen as you have said,” Mary replied.

English translation

Then the angel left.
