Illustration for the scene “The emperor loves new clothes”

Scene 1 · Intermediate

The emperor loves new clothes

English translation

Many, many years ago, there lived an emperor who cared so much about new clothes that he spent all his money buying them. His only ambition was always to look well dressed. He paid no attention to his soldiers, nor did he find any amusement in the theater.

English translation

What gave him pleasure was going out in his carriage and showing off a new outfit.

English translation

He had a different coat for every hour of the day. Of another king, people would usually say that he was in his office. But of him they would say, “The emperor is in his dressing room.”
