Scene 1 · Intermediate
The wicked magician's mirror
English translation
Once upon a time, a very wicked magician made a strange mirror. Everything good and beautiful reflected in it shrank almost to nothing, while anything ugly looked ten times worse. Wonderful landscapes looked like boiled spinach, and people’s faces became so distorted that even their friends would not recognize them.
English translation
A tiny freckle could cover an entire nose and mouth. Even a good thought made the mirror wrinkle.
English translation
The magician was enormously amused by his invention. The pupils at his school spread its fame everywhere. They even claimed that, thanks to the mirror, the world and its people could finally be seen as they really were.
