Era pieno inverno e dal cielo scendevano fiocchi di neve leggeri come piume. Una regina sedeva a cucire vicino a una finestra con la cornice di ebano, un legno nero. Mentre guardava la neve, si punse un dito con l'ago. Tre gocce di sangue caddero sulla neve bianca e quel contrasto di colori le sembrò bellissimo.
English translation
It was the middle of winter, and light snowflakes, as soft as feathers, fell from the sky. A queen sat sewing beside a window with an ebony frame, made of black wood. As she watched the snow, she pricked her finger with the needle. Three drops of blood fell onto the white snow, and she thought the contrast between the colors was beautiful.

English translation
“How I wish I had a child with skin as white as snow, cheeks as red as blood, and hair as black as the wood of this window!” she thought.

Poco dopo nacque una bambina che aveva proprio quei colori: pelle bianca, guance rosse e capelli neri come l'ebano. Per questo la chiamarono Biancaneve. Ma la regina morì quando la bambina venne al mondo.
English translation
Soon afterward, a little girl was born with just those colors: white skin, red cheeks, and hair as black as ebony. That was why they called her Snow White. But the queen died when the child came into the world.
