Scene 1 · Intermediate
Snövit föds
Snow-white is born
English translation
In the middle of winter, when snowflakes were falling like light feathers, a queen sat sewing by the window. As she looked out at the snow, she pricked herself on the needle.
English translation
Three drops of blood fell on the snow, and the red looked so beautiful against the white that she thought, “If only I could have a child with skin as white as snow, cheeks as red as blood, and hair as black as the window frame.” The frame was made of ebony, a black wood.
English translation
Shortly afterward, she had a daughter who looked exactly as she had wished. The girl was therefore named Snow White. But the queen died when her daughter was born.
