Scene 1 · Intermediate

Schneewittchen wird geboren

Snow-white is born

English translation

In the middle of winter, a queen sat by the window sewing. Outside, snowflakes fell from the sky like feathers, and the window was framed in black ebony. As the queen looked out at the snow, she pricked her finger with the needle. Three drops of blood fell onto the snow.

English translation

The glowing red against the white snow pleased her so much that she thought: “If only I had a child with skin as white as snow, cheeks as red as blood, and hair as black as this window frame.”

English translation

Soon afterward, she gave birth to a daughter. The girl truly had snow-white skin, red cheeks, and hair as black as ebony. That was why she was named Snow White. But the queen’s life ended when the child was born.
