In the town of Nazareth in Galilee, there lived a young woman named Mary. She was going to marry Joseph, a descendant of King David. Mary was a virgin: she had not yet been intimate with a man. Her relative Elizabeth was six months pregnant when God sent the angel Gabriel to Mary.

The angel came in and said:
“Rejoice, Mary! The Lord is with you. He has shown you great favor.”

English translation
The angel explained that the Holy Spirit would come upon her. The child would be born through the power of God, so he would be called the Son of God. Then the angel told her about Elizabeth. She had been unable to have children before, but now, in her old age, she was expecting a son. God can fulfill everything he promises.
